The Judd-Harris House, which is home to the Henry Sheldon Museum’s collection, was built in 1829 by the marble merchant Eben Judd and his son-in-law Lebbeus Harris. The three-story brick house was a monument to their stature in the local marble industry. With marble columns and window lintels and six elegant fireplaces of rare black marble, the house continues to have a stately presence in Middlebury center.
After moving into the house as a boarder in the 1850s, museum founder Henry Sheldon ultimately purchased the structure to house his growing collection of objects, which would become the core of the Sheldon Art and Archaeological Museum, founded in 1882. Since 1884, the Judd-Harris House has housed and displayed Henry’s idiosyncratic collection of community artifacts and curios and has been lauded as the oldest community-based museum in the United States.
In 2021, the poor condition of the majority of the window sashes in the Judd-Harris House became apparent, and a plan was sought and developed to remove, restore, and reinstall the affected windows. Restoration work has been skillfully completed by Jeff Fellinger and his team at Willard Street Traditions.
