Our 2024 Highlights

Our Spring Open House welcomed over 80 guests to the Museum to see new exhibits and connect with their community.

Our Museum Store received a much needed refresh and rearrangement! This year, we brought in lots of new local products that highlight some of Addison County's great artisans and craftspeople.

Eva Garcelon Hart and Summer Jack welcomed visitors to From Homespun to Couture: Fashion in Historic Middlebury's gallery talk and tour.

Scholar Kate Duffy presented The Lost Museum, as the keynote for the AALAC workshop.

Many thanks to our Middlebury Garden Club volunteers for all their hard work to keep the grounds looking so beautiful!

Middlebury New Film Makers Festival gathered in the garden and historic barn for Happy Hours during the festival's run in August/.

Model Boats by Jerry DeGraff delighted visitors of all ages this season!

In collaboration with Porter Palliative Care and the Better Middlebury Partnership, we hosted a Community Ancestor Altar on the Sheldon's front porch to honor the spirits of those we have lost.

Throughout the summer, we hosted pop-up kids' programs in the Museum garden, like boat building!

Zora Duquette-Hoffman and Vivian Ross, our summer community interns, worked on various collections and archives projects and assisted with many events!

Summer interns and Museum volunteer, Lucinda Cockrell, continued to care for the textile collection and ensured it remains moth-free.

Summer Jack, shared her vintage wardrobe with the community at Grandmother's Trunk, our vintage fashion festival.

The first annual Mingle at the Museum, organized the Sheldon's trustees brought live music, games and fun to the Sheldon's gardens in September!

Mt. Abe's middle school students completed a new curriculum unit on Charity & Sylvia, one of our nation's oldest on record Queer couples and visited the Museum and archives for a field trip.

Students went behind the scenes to learn about archival care and the work of an archivist!

Middlebury College's Design, Ornament, and Adornment: Self-Expression and Dissent course using archival materials for their research projects.

Simple Astonishment was a community conversation on the intersection of the arts and humanities with the climate crisis, using images from photographer Caleb Kenna and archival images from the Stewart-Swift Research Center. The evening was moderated by educator and writer, Liza Cochran with special guests, Jon Mingle, Caleb Kenna, Megan Mayhew Bergman and Cindy Hill.

Our first-ever Cardboard Carnival in partnership with Middlebury College's Center for Community Engagement was a big success!

Our Annual Meeting this year featured a community listening and engagement session, where together we envisioned how to "Shape the Sheldon's" future!
