Stone Cotton Factory before the 1891 fire. This factory was built in 1811.
In 1817 Joseph Gordon came from Scotland and built 20 power looms which are believed to be some of the first power looms built in the United States. In 1820, the building contained 840 spindles for cotton, 15 power looms together with two wool-carding machines.  The spindles produced a sufficient quantity of yarn daily for 500 yards of sheeting.
